In The Cool Couple's work, a virtual flight aboard a digital plane, the environmental impact of the Internet and that of the aviation sector give rise to a loop where reality and simulation are the same thing.
The plane flies for an hour. It takes off in Milan and lands in Rome. The artificial intelligence of the Microsoft Flight Simulator software reconstructs the earth perfectly. Flyin' High, the resulting video, is a flight simulation and is, at the same time, an NFT. In terms of pollution, buying it equals to actually getting on board: the amount of CO2 consumed by the aircraft is in fact the same as the technology needed to create the Non-Fungible Token. The project invites us to reflect on the interconnections between our activities and the climate disaster, and on how intricate the paradoxes we have generated are now.
In response to the pollution shared by the web and transportation, the skies fill with turbulence, and rising temperatures slow down the speed of data exchange. Now that life and the Internet are one, we seem stuck in a conceptual loop between reality and its representations, searching for logical threads in a world whose meaning we increasingly struggle to grasp.
The Cool Couple (often shortened TCC) is an artist duo based in Milan, Italy, and established in late 2012 by Niccolò Benetton (1986) and Simone Santilli (1987). They talk about images and their agency through a multi-disciplinary approach. TCC also love teaching, because it’s good karma to share. They are lecturers at NABA Milan and Course Leaders of the BA in Visual Arts at MADE Program, Syracuse.
